The Internet As A  Teaching And Learning Tool

The Internet as a teaching and learning tool can be used to engage students in higher-order thinking or otherwise. Depending on its incorporation in classroom activities, it may also contribute to the improvement of skills related to critical thinking, problem solving, and group work.

Using the Internet as a teaching tool is much more important than using it as a learning tool.

Do you agree or disagree with this statement- and Why?

I do not agree with the given statement because in my point of view and experience with the use of the internet it can be used as both a teaching tool as well as a learning tool. For example with the UWI the internet has been used as both a teaching and a learning tool for me in the sense that my weekly units teaches me new things as well as learning to use the various programmes to develop my knowledge. In one of my courses while it was teaching me about ‘collaborative learning’, for an activity, I had to learn how to use the internet to set up a game to play with my other classmates. So therefore while I was being taught through the internet I was at the same time learning how to play an online game. As for my class, the internet is being used to teach the students new ways in learning about topics stated in the curriculum. So as they are using the internet to be taught one thing or the other they are also developing skills to learn how to use the internet and the various programmes that it provides. Lever-Duffy and McDonald (2011) contended that the Internet provides and share data. Once data/information is shared it can be used for both teaching as well as learning.
